On Monday my dorm floor had its Christmas party! It was RIDICULOUSLY FUN. This event was a great lesson on having good times on a small budget. We're all college students, so we got creative in our activities! The best kind of party doesn't have to have expensive decorations, complicated entertainment, and gourmet food (though those things are great!). A good party brings all kinds of people together and makes them feel wanted, accepted, and loved. All the rest is peripheral!
First we had floor decorating time. We got a bunch of supplies out of our storage closet (lights, a very sad "Charlie Brown"-like tree, etc.) and decorated the hallway. I put in a fireplace DVD in my computer to add to the mood. (It even makes real crackling fire sounds!) We blasted some Christmas music, wore our Christmas sweaters and pajamas and hung out with each other. Emily made espresso for everyone and we compiled a cookie, veggie and dessert bar we all shared. Delicious stuff!
At 8:15 we judged the door decorating entries. They learned about it beforehand and had been working on them all week. There were some AMAZINGLY creative ideas! (I've got pictures below!) We handed out two Hershey's kisses to each person and gave them five minutes to run and place them by the doors they wanted to vote for. The winners, Amber and Jesse, got the prestigious "Silver Star" award and all the chocolate in front of their door.
At the closing of the night, we gathered around the middle section of our hall next to our short Charlie Brown tree and crackling "fire" and told personal Christmas stories in the glow of the holiday lights. As we ate cake balls a couple of the girls had made (no oven required! Good dorm dessert!), we laughed, we gasped, we got to know each other more. It was a great way to end the party!
I'm so blessed to be the RA of 29 women who know how to have fun, care about each other, and live their lives with purpose. Be sure to invest in the people around you this holiday season and express your care for them, even if it's in just little ways. They're the things that mean the most!

Okay, see the splatter marks on the wall and the ceiling? That's from when Emily's espresso machine must have run too long and -BAM!!!- exploded all the way up to the ceiling! Nobody in the room escaped unscathed. |
