Winter Blues

Flashback Summer: Winter Blues - 1940s vintage holiday outfit, fur jacket, tilt hat

Today is my 26th birthday, and I'll be celebrating with my family with lunch and a Star Wars viewing!  My father's birthday is tomorrow, and we're all gearing up our Christmas travel this week, so we're keeping it simple and celebrating together today.

What, on the other hand, did I not keep simple?  This outfit!  I wore this yesterday and put it together around my newest December skirt addition, a sparkly pinecone gathered skirt.  (I made a pinecone skirt last year too; it's just a good wintery motif!)  The blue color scheme is a nice change from the typical red and green Christmas colors I've been wearing.

I recently found a navy blue purse (finally!), so I completed a navy blue accessory set with the purse, gloves, hat, and belt.  I wear navy blue all the time, so I'm sure you'll be seeing these pieces again!

Over all of this, I wore a fur jacket I've been saving for a debut.  Technically... it's probably not cold enough to wear fur, but it's December and I'm not sweating in it... so I'm calling it good, haha.  A lady in my town was kind enough to give it to me, and it belonged to her mother.  I'm guessing by the silhouette that it's from the 1940s.  The label, "Woolf Brothers," is the name of a Kansas-City based clothing store that started in the 1860s and lasted until the 1990s.  I find a lot of things in this area with that label, particularly furs.  I looked to see if I could date the jacket by the label design.  I found a 1950s ensemble and 1950s dress with the same label and a 1940s coat with the same design but on a black label.  The other examples I found from the 1940s-1960s had the same label, so I'm still leaning toward a 1940s date on this coat because of the shoulder shape.  If you have a different opinion, please share!

I'm also not sure what kind of fur it is.  It's quite soft but fairly short hair with variations of gray mixed with bits of black and white.  I'm guessing chinchilla... but I don't know furs super well.  Ideas, anyone?

Anyway, it's a pretty glam jacket and I'm glad to finally have slightly-cool-enough weather here to wear it!

  1. Ooo I love that jacket! I would say '40s too, it's a sharp silhouette. Looking very wintry and festive, love this whole look x

  3. Those shoulders sure look '40s to me. Gorgeous. Do you feel like you're in an Agatha Christie novel when you wear it? I think I would...

  4. Love your jacket! I would guess that if the fur is super dense, it would be chinchilla. Chinchillas have a really thick, soft, yet light, and dense coat. If it is soft, light, maybe mink or rabbit but mink is really distinctive. . . No matter what it is, you look great in it.

  5. First, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Second, I LOVE wearing blues in winter too, but usually I do it in January.

Third, how soft is the fur? Chinchilla is EXTREMELY soft, much like seal, but more plush.

    1. It's quite soft, so that would still fit the chinchilla theory!
