Lovely Lounging 2: Peach 1930s Gown

Flashback Summer: Lovely Lounging 2 - Peach 1930s Nightgown

This is a follow up to my first post featuring some of the lovely things in which I like to lounge about the house!  Today I'm featuring this pale peach 1930s nightgown that I absolutely love.  It was one of those rare items that fit me without any alteration when I got it!  Truly magical!  It's made of the softest, prettiest silk charmeuse.  Basically I want to live swathed in silk.

It has the prettiest lace and knot motif on the top, too, and cute little puffed sleeves.  It ties in the back to bring a bit of shape, and the rest of the shape and drape comes from the fabric being cut on the bias.  Bias-cut nightgowns are the best because they allow "stretch" and movement but have a far prettier flowiness than stretch fabrics.

I didn't want to get too glamorous with this series, because I want to show you guys how I actually chill around my house.  On days when I have the whole day to myself and can work on things at home, this is pretty much how I'll look.  I like to wear my nicer vintage pajamas on those days, because I don't particularly like actually sleeping in them.  (The nightgowns especially.  I feel like I'm getting twisted up, and I keep waking up afraid I've snapped a waist tie or something!)  Days at home are when I can pull these pretty pieces out and enjoy them.

If I have an event that evening, I'll oftentimes curl my hair and wear a headscarf.  On other days like today, I don't have much going on and I leave my hair free.  This is what it looks like with just a bit of brushing.  A little crazy, a little wild, but some days my hair needs to be free from wraps and scarves and hairspray.  I usually don't wear makeup, just slather on some lotion and let my skin breathe.

Taking days to just rest is important to me.  You may not know it, but as a Christian, taking a day each week to recharge is actually mandatory for me!  How great is that?!  While not all Christians do this, I have never seen anything but benefit from it in my life.  When I take a day to rest, read, craft, and recharge my social battery, I feel so much better the remainder of the week.  It gives me the freedom to just do things for fun one day without feeling guilty about other chores or jobs I need to do.  It rejuvenates my emotions, spirit, and mind and gets me ready to go back to the daily grind with perseverance and positivity.

Do you set aside time to just chill and relax, guilt-free?  Have you found it helpful or rejuvenating?  What things do you do on your days off to recharge?

  2. "I want to live swathed in silk" - new blog tag line?! Peach has to be the loveliest colour for nightwear. I wish it was more popular with modern companies. You look divine!

  5. Such a pretty gown! I can imagine it would be lovely to lounge about the house in it. I agree, I've found that making sure I have time to recharge makes my week much better.

  6. I'm with Porcelina and Carla - more peach! This nightgown is amazing, and I love seeing your hair all natural like this. You do look like you are actually relaxing and comfortable and happy. And I have the same issue with most nightgowns of getting all twisted up! I can't imagine feeling ok sleeping in a vintage one!

  7. Love the Dress! So pretty and feminine! I am wearing a dress right now as I sit here and type this. Although it is raining here on the east coast, I am lover of dresses and am always looking for excuses to wear them!

  8. I love peach for nightwear and lingerie. It is just so pretty and delicate, and this one is so lovely.
I also make sure to take a day of rest each week- and I suffer for it if I don't. I agree, it IS so great that God specifically designed a day of rest for us (and yet in our sinful determined and stubborn ways, we often try to keep working and only end up burning ourselves out!)

  9. Do you mind if I ask what you wear under these nightgowns? I have a 1940's nightgown, but I'm wondering if I should wear a slip under it or peach underwear (though it has a fairly low back, so the bra can easily be seen) or if I should go without anything else underneath. I haven't been able to find any historical articles or blogs that mention the appropriate way to wear these sometimes fairly shear nightgowns.

    1. Hey Lianna! I just saw your comment, so sorry for the delay! Quite honestly, these are just pajamas. I wore more undergarments than I normally would because I'm not about to put pics on the internet without them, haha, but I don't think there's a "right" or "wrong" thing to wear under these. Each person probably just wore what made them comfortable, and that's what I still do.

  10. Wow, you look so elegant! #dayoffgoals indded. I slob around the house in trousers and a battered old top on my days off. (Every once in a while, beach pyjamas, but that's a rarity.)
