Harvest Fest 2012

Every fall my school has an event called Harvest Fest.  It's sort of a talent show/ short film festival/ Halloween/ roast event, and it's fun stuff.  Every year they come up with a new theme that the acts revolve around and the attendees dress up based on that theme.  This year was "Face Off", so the idea was to dress in opposites, enemies, etc.

I made my costume out of a fairly hideous gold 90s dress (underneath like a slip) and a giant sheer white old lady slip, both thrifted.  The accessories are ones I already had or borrowed.

I was WAY more proud of Jacob's costume (inspired by "Gladiator").  I made it out of thrifted curtains, a pleather jacket, belt, and an old fur stole I found at a flea market a while back.  (It's very versatile.  I used it for a 1920s look here.)

Here are some pictures of people at the event!  There were SO many clever costumes; it was entertaining to look around and try to figure out all the pairs and groups!

Fall Wish Outfit!

dress/belt/earrings/coat/shoes/tights

It's been normal Missouri weather here, switching between high and low temperatures all the time.  My favorite way to deal with crazy weather changes in fall is having dresses and tights available to mix and match.  Opaque tights make dresses warm and provide endless color combos to work with, and dresses can be worn without them for a warmer weather look!

I also ran across these shoes recently, and they're SO CUTE!!!!  Alas, they don't come in my size.... but someone get them so I can live vicariously through you!

Petite Pretties

In a world of soaringly tall, thin models all over the place, it can be depressing.

To be honest.

Oftentimes I feel that as a petite woman (I'm 5'0" even), I'm living in a "tall man's world," and it can be really frustrating.  However, small IS beautiful!  Some of the world's most iconic beauties have been on the vertically challenged side, and they came in all shapes and sizes.

The variety in shape, size, and build is what makes womankind so intriguing and gorgeous, so here's a post celebrating it!  Check out some of these vintage and modern shawties that rock their shortness!

Sometimes I Just Gotta Be Trendy

Flashback Summer: Sometimes I Just Gotta Be Trendy

As the post title says, and as I explain in my first post here, I just can't do vintage EVERY day at this point.  I do like skinny jeans, and I LOVE my black pleather jacket I got a couple years ago. I like some trendy, very "now" clothes, though my style still tends to lean vintage.

However, today was my boyfriend's birthday, and what better way to celebrate than to eat meat?  We went to Texas Roadhouse with another friend and had great discussion and a fun time was had by all.  I went with a comfy-modern yet warm look that I like a lot.  (Now there was no one in the dorm, and it was dark outside.... so I was reduced to a dorm photo shoot to record this.  Some days the photography just doesn't work out.)

Today was such a " 'Merica" day, as my friend Emily would say.  My dorm floor went to a local orchard to eat their delicious desserts that they make with their fruits.  It was a lot of fun, and we also took some photos to commemorate the fall festivities!  It was a crisp but lovely day out today, just perfect for a day at the orchard!  The ladies on my floor are SO GREAT, and it was wonderful to spend some more time with them.

Then, this evening I voted for the first time!  For the occasion I wore red, white, and blue today (and black...).  It's a huge privilege to have a say in my country's government, and it was amazing to exercise that privilege today!  I also took some pics to memorialize my first ballot cast.

Hospitality: Tea Set Essentials

Leonard: What's this?
Sheldon: Tea. it's costumary to serve hot beverages when one is in emotional distress. [pats Leonard's head] There there. You want to talk about it?
Leonard: No.
Sheldon: Thank godness. 'There there' was really all I had.
- From "The Big Bang Theory"

Tea is one of my favorite things in the world.  It's comforting, universal, diverse, and delicious.  When my family and I moved to Egypt when I was a teenager, I had to learn the art of serving tea properly.  Much to our Egyptian friends' dismay..... we Americans apparently had no idea.  (We're from Missouri.  We drink our tea super sweet, super iced, and super low maintenance.  We didn't know!)

Serving tea is a huge part of hospitality in most places in the world (though every culture has its own spin on it).  Whether drinking tea in a tent in the dusty Sahara or sipping it by a flawless pond and pagoda in Japan, offering a guest tea and chatting with them as you sip will go a long way in cultivating meaningful relationships in any cultural context.

Thus, I have gathered random odds and ends to make the tea set I currently have in my dorm.  Though it isn't matchy-matchy, each piece has a story and memory attached, and I love it!  I've described each piece needed for my basic "Tea 101" set below, and this should pretty much cover the gamut of any tea needs you'll have:

Flashback Summer- Hospitality: Tea Set Essentials
1. Tea Strainer
You set this over the cup when pouring the tea from a pot.  This catches any leftover leaf bits.
2. Teapot
This is the pot.... in which you put tea.  The one I have is metal and can be heated directly on the stove. (This is apparently a life necessity in Egypt.  A friend heard we were heating our tea water in a normal pot and was horrified.  She gave us this one in order to end our tea anguish.)
3. Sugar Pot
This is a little bowl to put sugar or sugar cubes in.
4. Milk/Creamer
This is technically used for Turkish coffee, I think, but in Sudan everyone used them to heat milk on the stove as well.  Find what you like and, if it works, use it!
5. A Mug or Teacup
I love collecting different types from around the world.  They're pretty universal and come in any shape, size, color you could want!
6. Tea Infuser
This is a little metal mesh ball that you can put loose leaf tea in to steep it right in the cup with hot water instead of making a whole pot.
7. A Tray
This makes all of your tea accessories mobile, and it's also much easier to clean everything up and take it back to the kitchen when you're done.  Plus they can be pretty darn cute.
8. Tongs
These can be used for sugar cubes or for taking used tea bags out of water.
9. Small Plate/Saucers
Both of these things serve the same purpose: providing a place to put used tea bags and spoons when people are done.
10. Small Spoons
Obviously, for stirring in sugar, honey, cream, lemon, or whatever else gets put into the tea.

Now for an extra tip!
How to squeeze a tea bag most efficiently

Flashback Summer- Hospitality: Tea Set Essentials, how to remove a tea bag most efficiently

1. Hold bag on spoon.  2. Bring string behind spoon and down.
3. Wrap string up and around bag and pull, squeezing out excess tea.
