1940s Victory Suit

Flashback Summer: 1940s Victory Suit - Veterans Day outfit

This past Veterans Day was the best one I've ever had!  It was my first time spending the day with other military community members, and it was extra meaningful and fun.  My husband is an Air Force officer currently in a military chaplaincy program at a seminary, and we spent the morning in a chapel service.  We sang old hymns, recognized veterans and current service members, and heard a message from a high-ranking general.  It was full of beautiful music, meaningful content, and symbolic tradition.  All of the program members were dressed in their finest uniforms and looking spiffy!

Afterward we had the chance to attend a luncheon with program members and the chapel speaker.  We were able to ask the general questions and speak to him a bit after.  It was a wonderful, encouraging time as he discussed cultural changes in the military, tips for being a good officer, maintaining family relationships, etc.

Later, all of us students and spouses that are part of the program hopped around for the free food offered to veterans on this day!  We had a donut here, an entree there, and many kind people even paid for our dinner and thanked us for our service.  Midwest America is one of the best places to be a veteran!

To put it in military terms, there was a lot of brass at the morning and lunch events we attended, so we had to look our best.  (There were lots of important, high-ranking people.)  I just bought this suit, and I knew it was the perfect time to debut it!  This is a power suit if I ever saw one, and I wore it with patriotic accessories to celebrate the occasion.

The suit is original 1940s, as are the earrings and the "V for Victory" brooch I dearly love. The shoes are from the 1950s, but I exercised my modern-woman right to mix decades.  How could I not wear them?!  The red, white, and blue leather is perfect!

I only got one good photo with Lt. Gen. Boykin the day of, so I recreated the look in order to share it with you guys. I think this is one of my top favorite outfits of all time!  The only downside is that I chose to recreate it on a VERY windy day, so my hair is a little deflated and scary.  But you guys can just look at the outfit, haha!

Do you ever wear patriotic looks in your country's colors?  Do you have any favorite patriotic pieces or outfits?  (If you have a link, do share!)

  2. A few years back I attended an event where Lt General Boykin spoke and to say it was inspirational is an understatement. Love your 40's V-day look!

  3. I love this suit, it's so you! I saw it posted on OLL and was really happy you got it. :) The two-tone grey is awesome and I can picture it styled so many ways. And your Victory pin is gorgeous too! I've been looking for one like that to add to my collection. Super excited to have recently purchased a "Remember Pearl Harbor" pin which has long been on my list.
