Outdoor Vintage

Flashback Summer: Outdoor Vintage - 1940s overalls

I haven't been fishing since I was a very small child, so I was excited when my husband suggested we go fishing last Sunday during the Labor Day weekend!  I love being out in nature, and I've found it does wonders for my psyche and morale.  We went to a local lake (Missouri has a lot of lakes and rivers to fish in), and we found a sunny spot on some rocks.  Although the only thing we caught was a tiny bluegill, it was still a wonderful time!  Sun, lake breezes, and time away from the daily grind is always welcome.

Looking vintage-cute while outdoors can be a bit tricky, but it's possible!  For me, I want clothing that is comfortable, weather-appropriate, and hardy.  This fishing trip had a bit of hiking to get to our fishing spot, so I also needed sturdy shoes.

I went with overalls and a t-shirt for my outdoor look.  These overalls, probably my best sewing decision ever, are sturdy and protect from brush and sticks, and it doesn't bother me if they get some dirt on them.  The t-shirt is a super comfy one that provides sun protection.  Lastly, I threw on my trusty Chaco sandals.  I've had these sandals for eight years now (including when I lived in the Sahara) and they're still going strong!

  1. Ooh, yeah, sometimes it can be difficult to balance the outdoorsy/more practical with vintage. Personally, I think pieces like your overalls are perfect, and it's also a chance to accessorize as well. Good vintage appropriate sunglasses, hats, and so on. :)

  2. My outdoor/summer casual often involves a tank and a knotted button up with a flowy linen skirt. Cool, breezy, and I stay covered. I can easily swap for shorts or pants if I need to for function sake. And maybe I'll toss a hat or a bandana on too. :) That's as close as I get to vintage casual in the summer.

I love your overalls! They're so cute and fit so well!

    1. Oooo, those are great pieces for summer! Especially the linen part; it's such a great hot-weather material.

    1. Haha! I have patterns because of that too! Yes, I absolutely love these overalls, and they're not difficult to put together. I think there are tutorials on the WH blog to help too.

  4. I love these overalls. It's nice to see how you wear "vintage style" for a more casual day, because as much as I love hats and dresses and heels, they are just not feasible for every thing. You nailed it here!
