Flashback Summer: Turbanista, 1940s 1950s vintage

Someday I'll do my hair again, but lately... Why?  Why when there are head wraps in the world?  I've been wrapping almost every day this week, including earlier when I went to a new friend's house for brunch with my sister and donned a turban!

I've been working on getting better at using this type of wrap, a long rectangle.  I paired this turban with a blazer made from a 1940s pattern, my Freddies jeans, a t-shirt, and Swedish Hasbeen clogs. I was surprised at how modern this look seemed even though it's made of vintage repro pieces.  Good fashion is timeless!

My sister was nice enough to take some photos for me.  This is my first post with iPhone photos.  I'm still figuring out how it all works!

  1. Could you show us how you wrap a turban of this length?

  3. I love literally every single thing about this outfit. I have a few partially sewn turbans I wear all of the time, but I'd love to try wrapping a flat one. You look great!

  4. Nice outfit! One of these days, I have to learn how to tie a turban, so I can use that as one of my hair-coverings at synagogue and after a potential future marriage.

  5. Great outfit - turban majorly included! I really, really like your 40s style blazer and agree that it, like the rest of this ensemble, has a powerfully timeless quality.

  7. You are right- good fashion never goes out of style, and this is such a classic look! I love how the turban looks so effortless with the blazer and jeans. And thanks for the link to your tutorial- I have tried tying that way a couple of times now and it works really well. :)

  9. Do you ever get confused for Muslim when wearing this turban? I want to wear something similar but people often equate looking Middle Eastern to being Muslim, even though I'm Mexican! I don't want to cause confusion haha

  10. No, I haven't. *Usually* a turban is more of a man's style in the Middle East (although some awesome female fashionistas are rocking it now!), but oftentimes the rest of an outfit also plays a role in creating a conservative Muslim look, not just what's worn on your head.
But, honestly, I'd say give it a go and see what happens. If a lot of people think you're Muslim and that bothers you, then don't wear it (or wear a different headwrap style). If it doesn't bother you, don't worry about it. For me it's always been more of a positive conversation starter than anything, but that's my personal experience.
