Trying Out Thred Up

Flashback Summer: Trying Out Thred Up - vintage sea foam silk blouse

Since I was a small child, I have had a love affair with the color sea foam.  I can't explain it.  I've just always really liked it.  In fact, when I was young my grandmother made me some sequined sea foam bell bottoms at my request. (They were fantastic, obviously.)

Thus, when I was perusing the Thred Up site, this sea foam blouse immediately caught my interest! Flowy, silk, sea foam.... That combo is ALWAYS a yes in my style book.

I had heard of Thred Up recently, but (to be honest), I wasn't tempted by the thought of perusing a website of modern clothes.  I think I was picturing an online charity shop or eBay type thing full of old pieces.  When a rep from the Thred Up team emailed me, I checked out the site to be gracious... and I was quite pleasantly surprised!

I haven't bought modern clothing in a long time, and I actually feel really great about purchasing from Thred Up.  It's new-condition clothing, but it's secondhand.  I found several pieces that, although modern, would work well with vintage clothing.  The blouse I chose is 100% silk, and the sleeves feel so dramatic to wear!

There is so much secondhand clothing in the world, and buying it instead of brand new pieces is a way to decrease clothing waste and send a message to the fashion industry to stop churning out low quality, fast fashion pieces that hurt the people who make them and our environment.  Personally, it helps me not to get caught up in the fad cycle the fashion industry has created that makes us think we need new clothing all the time.

On a pragmatic level, too, buying secondhand is way smarter for my budget.  I can't really stomach the idea of paying high prices for new clothing.  Vintage has spoiled me!  Vintage is great in the fact that you can buy it, wear it, and generally resell it for as much (or sometimes more) than you originally bought it for.  New clothes, however, pretty much lose most of their resale value when you walk out of the store.  Knowing that my style is still evolving, it's hard for me to buy new fashion pieces knowing it's difficult or impossible to sell them on if I tire of them after a while.  Thred Up's prices are much lower and help me afford higher-quality pieces that I couldn't afford new.

I combined my complimentary $30 credit with a new customer discount to get this $179 blouse for about $26, shipped.  It was delightful to shop on the site as it lets you filter the pieces to see only clothes in your size, price range, etc.  You can't do that at a normal thrift store!  I ordered my blouse, and it came really quickly and was beautifully packaged with a pretty, picture-filled booklet sharing the mission of the company.  (I was actually quite inspired by it!)

Oftentimes there are coupon codes right on the website to get you even better prices, too.  I highly recommend you guys check it out to supplement your vintage wardrobes.  Sometimes we vintage ladies need pieces that are hardier or less precious than true vintage for some activities, or we prefer certain modern items for comfort.  This is a great way to get those kinds of pieces without feeding the fast fashion industry or breaking the budget.

Have you checked out Thred Up?  What sort of items do you tend to buy modern to supplement your vintage looks?

I was compensated for this post in the form of store credit, but the opinions are honest and my own.  For more information on my sponsorship policy, go here.

  1. I had looked at them, but their prices were so high I didn't think it was worth it. I'm glad you had a good experience! That blouse is gorgeous!

    1. Really?! Their prices looked quite reasonable to me. I guess it depends on what you're looking at.

    2. I am lucky in that my local goodwill carries high end goods -- there are several consignment shops nearby, and what doesn't go to consignment goes to goodwill! So I pay $5 for silk blouses or cashmere sweaters. :P Do they have everything? No. But enough to carry -my- wardrobe (and I don't really need more clothes...)

  5. I really liked Thred Up. I was mainly excited since they have children clothing and maternity wear. Maternity clothing from what I hear is really hard to find in second clothing shops (I think most people swap their old clothes with friends and family or they get snatched up behind the scenes faster- my grandma does this "look I found this prada purse at the thrift store! you want it?") I already don't have the patience to look for clothing in my size at second hand shops let alone maternity clothing in my size!

That blouse does look great. I think they tend to pick higher end pieces so you can usually find good staple pieces for a vintage wardrobe on the site (like pencil skirts and such)

    1. So true, what a good point on maternity clothes! Those are also items that, from what I hear, people don't want to spend too much on, since they're temporary wardrobe items.

They do seem to have higher end pieces, which is nice. It makes it easier to find good quality.

  6. What a beautiful blouse! And I love how you have paired it with the slimmer skirt- it looks so vintage! I sometimes turn up my nose to modern pieces too, and have to remind myself that there are good modern clothes out there still- both in terms of quality and style. I would love to try out thred up, but alas, they are not available in Canada.

  8. It looks like they aren't outside the US yet but it seems like a great idea, a sort of curated ebay. I agree with Jennifer about the maternity - it was hard to find in second hand shops and there wouldn't be enough pieces to find what you were looking for. It's a great thing for the site to have. The blouse you got is lovely and very suited to your vintage style wardrobe.
