PUG Petites - Jenny Skirt & Peasant Top

Flashback Summer: PUG Pinup Girl Clothing Jenny skirt Italian riviera & black peasant top

I'm always glad when companies offer petite sizes.  As a short person, I often find reproduction garments that fit in the bust, hips, and waist... but they're all in the wrong spots.  The waist is below mine because the torso is cut too long for me, the apex of the hips are at mid-thigh because the skirt is so long.  Busts fit but shoulders and necklines are too wide. These things are fixable, but it's often an involved process, and--honestly--not usually worth it to me to do on a reproduction item.

Enter PUG petites!  I am pleased to show you a skirt from their petite line, the Petite Jenny skirt in Yellow Italian Landscape.  I've paired it with the black peasant top.  These are my first pieces from PUG, so I was intrigued to examine the quality and see if the sizing really worked for me.  Admittedly, I'm also branching out for a silhouette that I haven't worn much... but I have to say I felt FABULOUS!

First, the skirt.  It's made in the USA of an imported cotton-spandex fabric that feels thicker than the vintage border print skirts I own.  Here I'm wearing it without a slip or petticoat.  It's still opaque and has a great deal of pouf!  I'm not really a fan of having to wear petticoats (it feels too fussy for me), so I like the fullness of this skirt that doesn't require them.  It has a nylon back zipper and a pocket on each side.  (In these photos I had my camera remote, sunglasses, phone, and keys in the pockets, so they're quite roomy!)  I was pleased to find that the petite label was correct, and the skirt falls right below the knee on me as a 5' tall person.  The hem is accented with cute maroon pom-pom trim, too!

As far as the sizing on the skirt, the size chart puts an XS in the 24"-26" waist range, and I would say it's definitely at 26".  Although I cinched over the skirt with a belt in these photos, I'll definitely be removing about 2" off the waistband to help the skirt fit snugly.  I'll also be adding a hook and eye at the top of the zipper to make myself feel more secure when wearing it, for there's no such closure on it now.  However, these are easy fixes.  I'm just glad I didn't have to shorten it, risking cutting off the design and losing the pom-poms!

The black peasant top is not technically a "petite" piece, but it did fit fairly well nonetheless.  I got an XS in this as well.  It's a cotton-spandex blend, and these tops are made in the USA of imported fabric.  The only problem I had with this top was that it gaped a bit when I moved.  I think this is due to my narrow, petite shoulders and the elastic not stretching as much.  It's an easy fix, and I just shortened the elastic by about 2" to create a tighter fit at the neckline.

The size chart pairs an XS with a 32" bust and 25.5" waist.  For reference, I'm a 32"-24" and you can see that it blouses on me.  (I've seen others wear this with a tighter fit by sizing down, though the XS is the smallest they offer and I'm happy with it.)  It fit comfortably as an off-the-shoulder top, but I found the sleeves kept slipping when I attempted to wear them on the shoulder.  I don't mind though, as I love the off-the-shoulder look!

The blouse zips at the center back from the bottom up, and it's long enough to stay tucked in all day.  Although this blouse definitely looks a bit different on each person depending on proportions, the elasticized neckline/sleeves and bloused bodice make it accommodating of a lot of sizes and shapes.  I would love to add a few more of these tops in different colors to my closet!  I think they'd be fantastic for all of my European vacations on rivieras I plan on taking.... Eventually someday... Meanwhile I'll pretend, haha!

Yes, sadly, my arms are that many shades darker than my legs.  I obviously need to wear shorts more...

Overall, if you are around my size (32"-24"-35" and 5' tall), you may need to tweak the petite XS pieces just a bit to get a perfect fit.  However, these are far less involved than the sewing I usually need to do to repro, so I'm not complaining!  These PUG pieces are a great alternative for when you don't want to risk wearing vintage but you still want a legit vintage look.  I recommend them!

Have you tried out any PUG petite pieces or the peasant top?  How did they work for you?

  1. Very cute! I love the print and the pom poms on the skirt, and that hat is the perfect accessory to go with it.

    1. Thank you! I didn't think I'd get much use out of a black sunhat (kind of a weird color for summer), but it turns out I've worn it quite a lot!

  2. It is a lovely silhouette on you, and colour combination too. Since your accessory set posts on Instagram, I'm really noticing them now! (I'm working on my own too!)

    1. Ha, well thank you, Tanith! I'm trying. It's kind of slow going as I'm finding I'm pretty picky about belts and hats in particular...

  3. I am addicted to PUG's peasant tops! I have had a few issues with fit, but still love them because of the wide range of colors they come in.

I have several friends who are of similar height to you, and were having to shorten so much of their wardrobe, so they were overjoyed with the petite items.

    1. YES! I will be tightening the neckline elastic on mine, but otherwise it's not bad. (I'm cool with the blousier fit on top.) I get very tired of shortening things, so it IS fantastic to be able to buy petites every once in a while!
