Flashback Summer: Irrational Love Outfit - 1940s vintage style

Do any of you have one of those outfits that you love beyond all reason?  An outfit so perfect that you have an irrational happiness as soon as you put it on?  This is that outfit for me!

I have no idea why I haven't paired this blazer with this dress yet, but I LOVE IT!  They're separates that I've made from 40s patterns (details below), and I never thought to put them together until the other day.  I have a lot of red and blue accessories and perfectly coordinating 1950s shoes, so I knew it was meant to be!

I also got some aviator sunglasses recently because my sunglasses are all super dead (like tortoiseshell peeling off, cloudy scratched lens dead). They're obviously appropriate for a 40s look because I stole them off my fictional WWII pilot boyfriend and wore them. Obviously.

Now I'm not sure that aviators really work for my round face (they just seem to make it look even rounder!), but I enjoy the history and look of them so much that they're just one of those things that make me say, "FORGET the magazines! Forget the sunglasses advice articles! I have a round face and I will rock it!  I like aviators too much to say no!"

This outfit has made me realize how much happier I'd be with a smaller wardrobe with several solid basics like these to mix and match my statement pieces with. Obviously, I have patterns for these and have done test runs with these garments, so I'd be able to make more pretty easily.  But, sigh, add it to the queue!

  1. I had no such notion about those glasses and your face except to think they were pretty cool. That outfit, huge fan! I'm in the middle of sewing something red to go with a navy blouse. I'm just so in like with that combo.

  3. I am with you; I'm so into aviators at the moment it's not funny! I have vintage appropriate sunglasses, but I rock the aviators with just about every outfit anyways. They are too cool not too. ;P

I do love the combination of this dress and blazer, it looks great on you! Navy is an awesome color that's really appearing more and more on my radar and I want to add all the navy things to my wardrobe. It must happen! There must be navy!

  4. This outfit is sublime! Not only does it look fantastic, you can - more importantly, one could argue - instantly tell how blissful sporting it makes you feel and that ups its loveliness about a million percent. Confidence and joy really are the best backbones for any ensemble.

    1. The green grass JUST popped up recently. In my yard it's mostly covered by dead leaves and gumballs... I need to rake really badly. But this photo doesn't show that! Ha!

  15. It is an awesome outfit!

And I think those style tips are great to give you ideas to think about, and if you find you agree, you should adopt them. But if you don't - forget them! And extra special items get to break the rules anyway! These look great on you. (And don't forget that you are adding extra height to your face with the hair and scarf. I think that creates balance.)

    1. That's very true. I do love head scarves for that reason. Extra special items DO get to break the rules, you're right!

I risk repeating what all other ladies before me have already said, but: the dress is amazing. I'm loving it in every way: it's pop-up color is great, the shape is perfect.. and it fits you.. well: like it's made for you (pun intended!) :)

  17. I think this might just be my favorite outfit ever! Love the strong 40s silhouette and the colors - and those buttons *sigh*!!! You look so, so beautiful - I know other people have pointed it out before, but you really do bare a strong resemblance to a young Bette Davis.

    1. Thank you so much! You have amazing style, so that means a lot to me!
I have been told I look like Bette Davis by a few people, and that's a wonderful compliment! I think it's the big eyes, maybe.
