I still have the coat (I think I'll want it when I'm eventually somewhere really cold), and I think I will be shortening it. If you haven't given it away or sold the coat, I (like others) think you should shorten it to mid calf and use the remaining bits to make a coordinating hat - maybe something like this:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/269183529/1930s-vintage-french-sewing-pattern

We just finished a re-fashion sewing camp for kids at my shop and I wish I had seen this sooner to show them! My own refashions are not as ambitious at the moment but I did create a shrug (inspired by a 1920's cocoon coat) from an organza wrap and a vintage collar. Just posted about it on my website. If you are interested in looking at it, let me know.

Excited to read more about what you are up too. Cheers!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16298294637220022858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7382754892322119466.post-50719030091053084142017-03-01T14:28:08.373-06:002017-03-01T14:28:08.373-06:00This comment has been removed by the author.Diyclotheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14543873380804322803noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7382754892322119466.post-2859696575879825652017-01-17T12:32:58.859-06:002017-01-17T12:32:58.859-06:00Wow what a makeover! I like Kate-Em's idea of using the bottom length for a hat or muff. If you like everything about it other than the length I would shorten it so that you can keep it and wear it. It wouldn't need much off to get the mid calf look. You could use the leftover as trims for something else, or make self covered buttons for the coat. Or even reattached it at the bottom over the top of the new hem to make a banded section at the bottom. I'm not sure if that would be too fussy (cover it in fur??) but it could work.
Absolutely fabulous re-fashion though! I have a couple of refashion items but I just don't get to them when I have so much 'new' stuff to make from my stash. How I wish humans didnt need to sleep and then I could sew ALL NIGHT. Mwahahah! ;-PKittyMeowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08234505506035303913noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7382754892322119466.post-86613841212154952942017-01-06T01:13:22.388-06:002017-01-06T01:13:22.388-06:00Amazing! <3

I would be tempted to shorten myself, maybe just a few inches so it hits at the ankle. But I can see why you are torn because of the material.
